DOMENICO ZIPOLI 1688 - 1726
SUITE IN G MINOR / VIOLIN SONATA
Zipoli was a composer of the Baroque period. Although a successful musician in his native Italy, he became a Jesuit missionary and travelled to the Spanish colonies of South America where he composed religious music for the Reductions of Paraguay. These were settlements for the indigenous Guarani people who performed his music in church services. The following pieces, from his time in Italy, are the Suite in G minor from Sonate d'Intavolatura per Organo e Cimbalo, transcribed for guitar duet, and the Sonata for Violin and Continuo in A major, transcribed for guitar quartet. The transcription of the sonata is based on a realisation of the figured bass by Luigi Cataldi.
As an experiment, here's the Violin Sonata with an electronically-generated oboe part added to, or replacing, the first guitar. An oboe was chosen as its sound seems reasonably close to that of the real instrument, whilst an electronically-generated violin is less convincing.
Suite in G minor: Preludio, Corrente, Sarabanda, Giga
Sonata for Violin and Continuo: Largo, Allegro, Largo, Allegro
